Google Map Review Scam A detailed case study with Solutions;

In today's digital world, online scams are becoming increasingly common, targeting homemakers, retired individuals, students, and job seekers. This article aims to raise awareness about a new scam that has surfaced, commonly referred to as the "Google Map Review Job Scam."

You may have come across ads on Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube that offer easy "Work From Home" jobs, or you may have received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number about such an opportunity. These offers promise quick and easy money from the comfort of your home, making them appealing. One such offer is the "Google Review Job Scam".

Let's dive deeper into how these scammers operate and how you can protect yourself.

How the Scam Works:

Scammers take advantage of people's desire to earn extra income in their free time. After you express interest in one of these ads, they'll send you a message claiming the task is simple: you just have to leave "positive reviews" for certain brands on Google Maps and for each reviews, you 'll earn ₹100. If you agree, they 'll send you a Telegram channel link  to join,  this is the first step of the scam.

Stage 2:

Once you join the Telegram channel, a person will introduce themselves as a "teacher." Often, this will be a profile of an attractive lady  to gain your trust. On the first day, they will provide you with some Google Maps links and ask you to leave positive reviews and give the brands five-star ratings. You' ll then be asked to take a screenshot and send it to the "teacher" via Telegram. For these initial 4-5 tasks, you will receive payment, which gives the illusion of legitimacy. Once you complete this, they 'll add you to a VIP Telegram group.

Stage 3:

In the VIP group, there will be more people (mostly bots or others involved in the scam). Here, you’ll be asked to complete 20-24 review tasks per day.  Since it's  just reviews, you'll think it easy money and agree to proceed. But this is where the actual scam begins. 

They will offer to pay you ₹2000/₹2200 daily and introduce "special tasks" or  "Merchant Payments"  that promise even more around  ₹4000/₹5000 extra for completing them. In total, they'll make it seem like you can easily earn ₹7000-₹8000 a day.  But there's a condition;  if you fail to complete all the tasks in one day, you’ll get nothing. These  "special tasks"  are the main  trap for you.

The Real Trap: Special Tasks" (Merchant Payment):

In the special tasks, you 'll be required to  deposit  ₹1000 to ₹50,000, with the promise of a 30% return within 30-60 minutes. This is where they exploit your greed. At first, they’ll return the money with the promised profit, making you trust them. But soon after, they’ll ask you to make another deposit for the next task. 

Let 's say you have ₹5000, and you deposit it. Once you’ve made the deposit, they will ask for more. If you don't have any more money and refuse to deposit, they 'll hold your deposits along with the earnings you have accumulated from the reviews or if you deposite a big amount then they stop to communicate you. This is how they trap and exploit you.

How to Stay Safe from the Scam:

(i) Don't fall for promises of easy money: Always be wary of jobs that offer quick money with little effort. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.A

(ii) Avoid unknown Telegram channels: 

Be cautious about joining Telegram channels or groups shared by strangers, especially those that promise money.

(iii) Check for reviews:

Before engaging with any "Work From Home" opportunity, search for reviews or complaints online.

(iv) Secure your bank transactions:

Always use trusted payment methods through official banking apps. Avoid using UPI for transactions with unknown parties, as your bank won’t take responsibility for such transfers.

What to Do If You've Been Scammed:

If you realise you have fallen victim to this scam, Follow these steps immediately:

(a)  Contact your bank: Call your bank's customer service and report the scam. Provide details about the account where you transferred money.

(b) Block further transactions: Request your bank to block any further transfers from your account.

(c) File a complaint: Visit India's "Cybercrime Portal" and lodge a formal complaint.

(d) Alert your contacts: Let your friends and family know about the scam to prevent them from falling for similar traps.

Although it may be difficult to recover the lost money, timely action and a proper report can increase your chances.
